You do not have to live with constant sadness & hopelessness. Our evidence-based depression treatment helps you regain energy, interest, & connection to the life you want.

What Is Depression

Depression is more than feeling sad. It is a medical condition that affects mood, thinking, and physical functioning. Depression changes brain chemistry and disrupts the systems that regulate emotion, energy, sleep, and motivation. Without treatment, depression can persist for months or years and significantly impair quality of life.

Depression takes several forms. Major depressive disorder involves episodes of severe symptoms lasting at least two weeks. Persistent depressive disorder is a chronic form where symptoms last for two years or longer at a lower intensity. Situational depression occurs in response to specific life events such as job loss, divorce, or bereavement.

Regardless of type, depression responds to treatment. Research consistently shows that therapy produces significant improvement for most people with depression, and many achieve full remission of symptoms.

Common Symptoms & Warning Signs

Depression manifests differently across individuals, but common symptoms include persistent sadness or empty mood, loss of interest in activities once enjoyed, changes in appetite and weight, sleep disturbances including insomnia or oversleeping, fatigue and decreased energy, feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt, difficulty concentrating and making decisions, and thoughts of death or suicide.

Warning signs that depression may be developing include withdrawal from social activities, declining performance at work or school, neglecting personal hygiene, increased irritability, and turning to alcohol or drugs to cope. If you notice these changes in yourself or someone you care about, professional assessment is warranted.

How Therapy Treats Depression

Several evidence-based therapies have demonstrated effectiveness for depression. At Southside DBT, we use approaches matched to your specific presentation and needs.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression

CBT is one of the most researched treatments for depression. This approach identifies negative thinking patterns that maintain depressive symptoms and teaches you to replace them with balanced, realistic thoughts. CBT also uses behavioral activation to increase engagement in activities that improve mood.

DBT for Depression

DBT provides skills for emotional regulation and distress tolerance that help manage depressive episodes. Mindfulness techniques teach you to observe negative thoughts without being consumed by them. DBT is particularly helpful for depression that co-occurs with emotional dysregulation or self-harm.

Mindfulness-Based Approaches

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy combines meditation practices with cognitive techniques to prevent depression relapse. This approach teaches you to recognize early warning signs of depression and respond with awareness rather than automatic negative patterns.

Benefits of Seeking Treatment Early

Early treatment produces better outcomes. Depression that goes untreated tends to become more severe and more resistant to intervention over time. Episodes may become longer and more frequent. Early treatment interrupts this progression and often results in faster recovery.

Treatment also prevents the secondary problems depression causes. Untreated depression damages relationships, impairs work performance, and increases risk for substance abuse and physical health problems. Addressing depression early protects these areas of life from harm.

What to Expect in a Session

Depression treatment sessions typically occur weekly and last 50 to 60 minutes. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to identify treatment goals and track progress over time. Sessions include discussion of current symptoms and recent experiences, skill teaching and practice, and homework assignments to complete between meetings.

Your therapist will develop a treatment plan based on your specific symptoms and circumstances. This plan outlines the therapeutic approaches to be used and establishes goals for treatment. Plans are reviewed regularly and adjusted as you progress.
