Impulse Control Disorders Treatment

Regain control over urges & impulsive behaviors. Our therapy teaches you to pause, consider consequences, & make choices that align with your values.

What Are Impulse Control Disorders

Impulse control disorders are mental health conditions characterized by difficulty resisting urges or impulses to perform actions that are harmful. These behaviors provide short-term relief or gratification but cause long-term problems. The individual feels increasing tension before the act and relief or pleasure afterward, reinforcing the behavior despite negative consequences.

Several specific disorders fall under this category. Intermittent explosive disorder involves recurrent episodes of aggressive outbursts disproportionate to provocation. Kleptomania is the recurrent failure to resist urges to steal objects not needed for personal use or monetary value. Pyromania involves deliberate fire-setting on more than one occasion with tension before and relief after.

Other impulsive behaviors not meeting criteria for specific disorders also respond to treatment. These include impulsive spending, reckless driving, binge eating, and other actions performed without adequate consideration of consequences.

Common Symptoms & Triggers

Impulse control problems share common features across different behaviors. You may experience mounting tension or arousal before acting, find yourself unable to resist the urge despite wanting to stop, feel pleasure or relief during or immediately after the behavior, and experience guilt, shame, or regret afterward.

Triggers vary by individual but often include stress, emotional distress, boredom, fatigue, and substance use. Certain environments or situations may also increase vulnerability to impulsive behavior. Identifying your personal triggers is an important step in treatment.

Therapy Techniques for Impulse Control

Treatment for impulse control disorders uses techniques from several evidence-based approaches.

CBT helps you identify the thoughts and beliefs that contribute to impulsive behavior. You learn to recognize cognitive distortions, challenge them, and develop more balanced thinking. Behavioral strategies help you avoid high-risk situations and develop alternative responses.

DBT provides skills specifically designed for impulse control. Distress tolerance skills teach you to survive urges without acting on them. Mindfulness increases awareness of impulses before they lead to action. Emotional regulation addresses underlying emotional states that drive impulsive behavior.

Mindfulness training teaches you to observe urges without automatically acting. By creating space between impulse and action, you gain the opportunity to make conscious choices rather than reacting automatically.

Building Self-Control & Emotional Balance

Treatment builds your capacity for self-control gradually. You learn to recognize early warning signs of impulsive urges and intervene before behavior occurs. Techniques for managing distress reduce the intensity of urges. Over time, the gap between impulse and action widens, giving you more control.

Emotional balance supports impulse control. Many impulsive behaviors occur during states of emotional dysregulation. By developing skills to manage emotions, you reduce vulnerability to acting impulsively. A calmer baseline makes it easier to resist urges when they arise.
